Hundreds of Portlanders breeze by the tree-shaded courtyard at the corner of Flanders and 10th without noticing its two soaring pillars, the Lovejoy Columns. Carefully drawn in chalk and then painted by artist and nightwatchman Tom Stefopoulos from 1948 to 1952, the pillars were moved here in 2006 from beneath the since-demolished Lovejoy Ramp viaduct. The intricate imagery, rooted in Greek mythology, are a testament to the neighborhood’s rich and colorful industrial heritage.
