PEARL DISTRICT BUSINESS AWARDS

The Pearl District Business Association (PDBA) has opened nominations for the fourth annual Pearl District Business Awards, which recognize individuals and businesses that are making a difference within Portland’s flourishing Pearl District. The nomination period ends on September 14. Visit explorethepearl.com for details.

This year’s award winners will be honored at a luncheon on Wednesday, November 7, at a brand-new venue this year, the elegant 5,000-square-foot Chown Annex event space at NW 16th Avenue and NW Everett Street. You can read more about Chown Annex, which welcomes events of up to 225 guests, here.

Upfor Gallery Pearl Portland

UPCOMING AT UPFOR GALLLERY

Where: Upfor Gallery, 929 NW Flanders St, 503-227-5111, upforgallery.com
When: Amy Stephens, Sept 5–Oct 27; Ralph Pugay, Nov 1–Dec 22

At this early-autumn show, Amy Stephens reclaims objects and imagery to create assemblages from materials suggestive of urban living and its architecture, including wood, metal, fabric, plexiglass, and fluorescent tape. Unframed photos or Polaroids figure in her carefully layered works (right), playing with ideas of exterior and interior.

Then beginning November 1, see the playful yet unsettling works (left) of Ralph Pugay, whose colorful, narrative paintings juxtapose cultural norms and ideas that collide unexpectedly. “A lot of them are of situations where there’s perversity or something catastrophic happening, but I see them as allegories for general questions about consciousness and life,” says Pugay.
