Arts & Events – Winter 2018

Head to bustling Jamison Square Park for the Annual Holiday Tree Lighting on Saturday, Nov 24 (4:30–6 p.m.), to usher in the holiday season. Sing carols, enjoy cookies and beverages and watch the lighting of the 30-foot-tall Oregon Cascades fir tree. Share selfies on social media (#PearlPortland) and browse local shops throughout Portland’s three-day (Nov 23–25) Little Boxes, which celebrates local, independent retailers—including Oblation Papers and Perch Furniture—and offers the chance to win valuable prizes.

Where: Gerding Theater at the Armory, 128 NW 11th Ave, 503-445-3700,

When: A Christmas Memory paired with Winter Song, Nov 24–Dec 30; The Second City’s A Christmas Carol: Twist Your Dickens, Nov 27–Dec 23; Bedlam’s Sense & Sensibility, Jan 12–Feb 10; Buyer & Cellar, Jan 19–Mar 3; Tiny Beautiful Things, Feb 23–Mar 31.

During the heart of Portland Center Stage’s current season, theatergoers will be treated to everything from rollicking holiday fare—A Christmas Memory and the perennially beloved Second City’s A Christmas Carol: Twist Your Dickens—to a trio of riotously funny productions, starting with Sense & Sensibility. This offbeat interpretation of Jane Austen’s comedy of manners reinforces the timelessness of this tale that’s now more than 200 years old.

In the intimate Ellen Bye Studio, Buyer & Cellar recounts the humorous travails of a struggling actor relegated to taking a job in Barbra Streisand’s private shopping mall. And Tiny Beautiful Things documents Wild author and Portlander Cheryl Strayed’s turn as advice columnist “Dear Sugar.”
