Tina Tsai, founder of the Eye Studio (339 NW 9th Ave, 503-219-0023, the-eyestudio.com), is an optometrist who’s always had very clear vision.
Of course, she has her pick of on-trend glasses at her sleek eye clinic, but her clarity also applies in a metaphorical sense. “I grew up in the Bay Area of California and wanted to be my own boss since I was a little girl,” she says. So when she was studying optometry at UC Berkeley, her goal was to have her own practice. And when she relocated to Portland for her husband’s job in 2004, she knew exactly what she wanted to do: “To create a comprehensive eye clinic in a spa-like setting with personalized eye care.”
A quick tour around the city left one obvious choice: “it was really clear that the Pearl was the right setting.” She noted the vibrancy and energy in the neighborhood, and also that the many restaurants, art galleries, and retail shops provide an “elevated experience” for clients.
Today, in addition to fashionable eyewear, Tsai offers cutting-edge eye care. New services include Lipiflow, a new in-office eyelid treatment for dry eye disease, which is becoming more prevalent with increased use of digital devices. (Our blink rate slows when we’re looking at a screen, making it harder for our oil glands to moisten our eyelids.) Another new service is Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-k, which uses special contact lenses to reshape the cornea, instead of correcting vision with glasses. “It’s very exciting technology,” she says. –Alison Stein
